Meet Kevin Brooks
The story behind the message.
From tragedy and loss to purpose, forgiveness, resilience, and impact.
Before
A kid with his whole life ahead of him

Kevin Brooks never planned to become a motivational speaker. He was a skateboarder, snowboarder, and hockey player — a teenager from Cloverdale, British Columbia who believed his whole life was still ahead of him.
Growing up, the rink was a second home. Road trips, tournaments, and a best friend named Brendon, a childhood hockey teammate whose family and Kevin's were close for years.
June 2000
One choice changed everything

What started as a typical Saturday night of partying turned tragic with one fateful choice. Fueled by alcohol and that fearless “it will never happen to me” attitude, Kevin left a party and got behind the wheel — intoxicated, distracted, and driving at excessive speed. Beside him sat Brendon.
The result was a horrific crash. Brendon did not survive. Weeks later, Kevin woke on life support to devastating news: he was paralyzed from the chest down.
The hospital
Just wiggle your toes
In disbelief, Kevin tried to move his legs. He gave everything he had to just wiggle his toes — but his lower body lay still.
Recovery wasn't about running. It wasn't even about walking. The goal was simply to wiggle his toes. Those four words became more than a challenge: they became a symbol of hope, resilience, and the belief that even the smallest step forward still matters.
In his darkest days, Kevin's first thoughts were of giving up. What changed everything again was who showed up: his family, his friends — and Brendon's family.
Forgiveness
Another chance he didn't expect
“They truly gave me another chance, and I knew I had to do something positive with it. They also taught me an invaluable lesson in forgiveness.”
— Kevin, on Brendon's familyBrendon and Kevin grew up together — their families spent years at the rink and on road trips. Facing Brendon's parents was the hardest thing Kevin has ever done. Their support and forgiveness became the foundation of everything that followed.
Months of rehabilitation followed, healing a grocery list of injuries. Still faced with insurmountable challenges, Kevin chose to swim rather than sink. And swim he would — literally.
Two years later
A chance meeting with Rick Hansen

Kevin's journey as a speaker began with a chance meeting with Rick Hansen — the “Man in Motion” who wheeled around the world in 1985 to change attitudes about disability. Meeting a fellow paraplegic who had accomplished so much was a life-changing experience.
A seed was planted that day. Kevin began asking how he, too, could make a positive difference.
The lake
From Wheels to Water
“I found a way to roll through the sand. It wasn't easy, it wasn't pretty, but I got in the lake.”
— Kevin, to SamaritanmagOn a beach day with his mother and six-year-old sister Hayley, Kevin watched from the sidelines as Hayley splashed in the water — and felt the full weight of what his choice had cost. Determined not to let the day be ruined, he fought his wheelchair through the sand and into the shallows to play with her. That day he made a secret vow: he would come back and swim across that lake using nothing but his upper body.
After six months of training, the From Wheels to Water fundraiser happened that summer. Kevin swam the lake, raised nearly $10,000, and drew local media. A week later, he was invited to tell his story in an elementary school library.
He didn't know it yet, but that presentation was the beginning of everything.
Today
A mission across North America

Twenty-plus years later, Kevin has spoken in well over a thousand middle and high schools, dozens of colleges and universities, countless community events and conferences, and for thousands of US Army troops. His story has been featured on The Tyra Show, in Reebok's Super Bowl campaign, and in SonReal's “Believe” music video.
Today, Kevin's message is about accountability, resilience, forgiveness, moving forward — and making better choices. One minute he'll have you laughing. The next, crying. By the end, audiences leave changed.

Why Kevin speaks
One decision changed his life. Now his story helps change others.
Kevin's story is not about perfection. It is about what happens when life changes in an instant and you still have to decide who you are going to become.
He speaks because choices matter. Because people are worth reaching. Because one story can stay with someone long enough to help them make a better decision.
One choice can change everything. So can the next one.
